determined, ultimately, not by empirical markers but by divine revelation: The question is whether or not a particular theology offers a faithful and true rendering of our final end. By offering some of my own thoughts on deification in dialogue with the authors of the Handbook, I make clear why a proper understanding of what deification is requires the essence-energies distinction. Only by accepting this traditional, patristic distinction can deification be properly participatory in character.

Deification As Participation Mth 2026

82.9KB ∙ PDF file

Download
Download

A Metaphysic of Love

God Beyond Being

Fr. And theophany is the love of God. This article—published in The New Ressourcement, 3, no. 1 (2026): 316–40—addresses how and why the world is the theophanizing of God’s love, arguing that creation is simply God appearing in a different (creaturely) mode. Since transcendence does not imply separation between creator and creature—but, rather, implies participation—transcendence enables God’s immanence in creation. Divine transcendence is best expressed by the language of Love (rather than Being) as the marker for the God beyond being. To be sure, Love and Being are not mutually exclusive, even if the former precedes the latter ontologically. But by prioritizing the name of Love or Goodness, Christian Platonism acknowledges that the Being of God arises out of his Love. Such prioritizing is a confession that God is beyond being and intelligibility. It acknowledges that we never fully grasp the always “receding horizon” of Love, that the essence of God remains ever beyond us, as he generously stoops down to us in theophanic appearance.

Metaphysic Of Love New Ressourcement 2026

279KB ∙ PDF file

Download
Download

Participatory Metaphysics and Creation out of God

Christian tradition has uniformly both (1) rejected Aristotle’s eternity of matter and (2) insisted on creation ex nihilo rather than creation from pre-existing matter.

Fr. Differences remained, however, on how exactly to understand the creator-creature relationship. Two streams of thought emerged within Christian tradition. One emerged from Augustine, which held on to Aristotelian prime matter as substratum, as a result of which creation ex nihilo over time became an instrument in defending the autonomy or independence of creation in relation to God. The other, which emerged via Irenaeus, Gregory of Nyssa, Dionysius, and especially Maximus the Confessor, held that creation is not only ex nihilo but also ex deo (ἐκ θεοῦ). Here, ex nihilo teaching served not to shore up the independence of creation but rather to limit it: it served as an anti-materialist argument and (in some forms) relied upon immaterialism.

We need both the notion of creation ex deo and Cappadocian immaterialism to sustain a genuinely participatory metaphysic. The Augustinian-Thomist approach relies unduly upon an Aristotelian-Plotinian view of matter. We should resist using creation ex nihilo to shore up the modern notion of nature as independent from God. The Christian teaching of creation ex nihilo opposes primarily the Greek—and especially Aristotelian—belief in the eternity of matter.

Participatory Metaphysics And Creation Out Of God Heyj 2025

197KB ∙ PDF file

Download
Download

Reading for Deification

Maximus the Confessor's Hopeful Pedagogy

Fr. This lecture turns to Saint Maximus to argue that Christology requires us to treat creation as divine embodiment. The Incarnation tells us how God typically manifests himself in created form. God's paradigmatic way of acting is visible, therefore, in the Incarnation. The Incarnation—God’s original and full manifestation in the flesh—is figuratively present throughout creation. Creation, therefore, is is a theophany or embodiment of God.
<span I will do so by turning to the sixth-century Syrian monk Dionysius, in part because he was the first to use the term hierarchy and wrote extensively about its relation to power, and in part because Dionysius thought deeply about hierarchy both in terms of the structures of reality in general and in terms of ecclesial structures. I hope to show that the Dionysian hierarchy, which undergirded church and society in the Middle Ages, did indeed have the functioning of power at its center, but not the kind of power that violently imposes itself upon the disenfranchised and marginalized but the kind that lovingly lifts others in the being of God.
<a class="file-embed-button narrow" Before arriving at this more critical analysis, however, it is incumbent on me to observe that the decree presents a remarkable opening for ecumenical dialogue, one that would have been unthinkable in the context of earlier magisterial teaching on ecumenism. Although the language of the “spirit of Vatican II” may be controversial and can be misused, there is little doubt that the council documents breathe an unprecedented spirit of openness or We should keep in mind, however, that it is only through the acknowledgement of the ontological priority of the Christ event (and of the church’s identity within the Christ event) that the He discusses it particularly in his polemics against Gnostic approaches to the Scriptures and to the law. Justification typically serves for Irenaeus within a broader, participatory framework of salvation. When we take these aspects into account, unexpected ecumenical possibilities open up between Orthodox, Catholics and Protestants. One of the most important lessons from Irenaeus’s discussion on justification, therefore, is that justification should not be treated as an insulated doctrine. Instead, it is an aspect of participation in Christ’s recapitulation and as such serves to uphold and strengthen our deifying union with God in Christ.
<a class="file-embed-button narrow" The concomitant effect, particularly among those building on the neo-Calvinist tradition, is a focus on the use and enjoy- ment of this-worldly goods in the eschaton. The underlying theological reason for this is connected, it seems to me, to the nomi- nalist metaphysic that has shaped modern culture. A nominalist separation between natural and supernatural ends makes it dif- ficult theologically to focus on God himself as the ultimate telos of our pilgrimage. By contrast, the earlier participatory ontol- ogy that characterized premodern thought treated this-worldly objects as pointing to and participating in the being of God himself—the ultimate supernatural end of human existence. In this essay I limit myself to the Reformed tradition. My main argument is that recent eschatological trends within the neo-Calvinist tradition run counter not only to the traditional consensus of East and West but also to neo-Calvinism’s own Reformed heritage. The reason for this marked departure is closely linked to a rejection of the earlier tradition of Christian Platonism, with its emphases on participation in the divine life, on the beatific vision as the final end of human beings, and on God himself as the ultimate object of all human desire.
Christian History Institute.)

IN 1946 in a world shattered by war, the Catholic Church stood as an unmoved landmark. For Catholics the church offered refuge from the chaos of the twentieth century and a moral and intellectual vantage point from which to criticize the secular world and offer a constructive alternative. The bedrock of this confident, assertive Catholicism was the philosophy and theology of Thomas Aquinas (1225–1274), enshrined by Leo XIII in his 1879 encyclical Aeterni Patris as “the special bulwark and glory of the Catholic Faith.”

The intellectual system of Neo-Thomism, built on Aquinas’s teachings, claimed to represent timeless, fixed, objective truth drawn from two sources: rational inquiry into the created, natural world and the supernatural truth revealed by God in Scripture and tradition. But even as Aquinas’s teachings gained ground in the nineteenth century, other scholars were claiming that divine revelation must be understood as part of time-bound processes studied by historical scholarship.

Early twentieth-century popes fought these views, which they dubbed “modernist.” Pius X explicitly condemned them in 1907. And yet no condemnations from the Vatican could keep Catholic intellectuals from the scholarly study of the past. Cautiously, with one eye on the papal condemnations, some young scholars began to tiptoe back onto the forbidden ground.

A French bombshell

These scholars sought much greater openness to ecumenism and a recovery of much more ancient liturgical and Scripture study practices, and they had a generally more positive outlook on modern thought and cultural trends. So it was that in 1946, Réginald Garrigou-Lagrange, leading Dominican scholar at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome, found himself perusing a collection of writings from France. Garrigou-Lagrange grew more deeply concerned with every page he turned. Indeed he had every reason to be troubled. Hardly the first, these writings were the latest in a line of attacks on Neo-Thomism from the Jesuit faculty at Fourvière in France.

Patristics scholar Henri de Lubac (1896–1991) had settled in Fourvière-Lyon in 1929, and his influence was spreading. He taught at the Catholic University of Lyons but he lived at the Fourvière scholasticate (a type of seminary) just outside the city. De Lubac’s writings caused a stir. His 1944 book on the Eucharist, Corpus Mysticum (The Mystical Body), seemed a thinly veiled attack on the traditional Catholic doctrine of transubstantiation, promulgated in the thirteenth century, that the Eucharistic elements became the actual body and blood of Christ.

Only two years later, de Lubac directly challenged Neo-Thomism with The Supernatural (1946). This book attacked the separation taught by Thomists between nature and the supernatural, between philosophy and theology, and between church and world. Furthermore it reached back beyond Aquinas to earlier medieval and ancient patristic sources for support.

De Lubac’s influence was multiplied when a steady stream of his students took up the pen. Hans Urs von Balthasar (1905–1988) moved to Fourvière from Switzerland in 1929 to study theology. There de Lubac drew his attention to early fathers such as Origen and Gregory of Nyssa. Balthasar wrote later that his teacher “showed us the way beyond the scholastic stuff to the fathers of the church and generously lent us all his own notes and extracts.” In 1939 Balthasar wrote “The Fathers, the Scholastics, and Ourselves,” which deliberately went back behind Aquinas and the scholastics to the foundational Christian theologians who shaped the faith before 700 AD (see CH issue #80) as an enduring source for Christian doctrine.

Looking to the East

Jean Daniélou (1905–1974), another protégé of de Lubac, also felt the deep attraction of the spiritual writings and scriptural interpretive methods of the church fathers. Daniélou like his fellow students in Fourvière, looked to de Lubac as his academic and spiritual mentor. Together with de Lubac, he started republishing the church fathers in the Sources Chrétiennes (Christian Sources) series—initially focusing on the Eastern fathers, whose approach diverged more sharply from Neo-Thomism than that of Western fathers. In 1943 he also published a groundbreaking book on Gregory of Nyssa, Platonism and Mystical Theology.

Another critic, a young Jesuit theologian named Henri Bouillard (1908–1981), joined the Fourvière faculty in 1941. He published a book in 1944 called Conversion and Grace in Thomas Aquinas, which some saw as an attack on Thomism and on the need for divine grace in the conversion process.

Meanwhile up north in Belgium, Dominicans such as Marie-Dominique Chenu (1895–1990) had also been questioning Neo-Thomism. Chenu, professor of the history of dogma at the seminary Le Saulchoir, had done his doctorate under Garrigou-Lagrange at the Angelicum, as the Pontifical University was usually called. But the two theologians’ approaches could hardly be more different.

Chenu appealed for a “return” to the sources and for the “historical method.” Suspicious of perennial theological systems such as Aquinas’s, he said that Christian experience and the church’s liturgy were key sources for Christian doctrine. In the 1930s Chenu advocated alongside the jocistes (the Young Christian Workers organization) for better labor conditions for ordinary workers. To some this was dangerously close to Marxism. Chenu himself jokingly commented that some thought there were two Chenus, “one old medievalist . . . and a kind of scoundrel who runs in the lines of fire of the holy church.”

But there was really only one Chenu, and to Garrigou-Lagrange his student’s academic work and his social engagement both stemmed from the same troubling starting point. In 1931 Chenu’s former student Yves Congar (1904–1995) had joined him at Le Saulchoir. Like his teacher the young Dominican priest overstepped commonly accepted ecclesial boundaries. His Divided Christendom (1937) was one of the first Catholic works that seriously engaged ecumenical relations, not only with the Orthodox but also with Protestants. Going backward also meant looking outward.

To Neo-Thomist Garrigou-Lagrange, who later earned himself the moniker “the sacred monster of Thomism,” these writings all seemed like a betrayal of truth, trading Aquinas’s intellectual approach for something much more nebulous. He countered with a vehement article in the journal Angelicum in 1946 entitled “La Nouvelle Théologie, où va-t-elle?” (published in English as “Where Is the New Theology Leading Us?”).

Here he attacked the relativism that he saw as inherent in the approach of Bouillard and de Lubac. He also rejected the evolutionary ideas of their colleague Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881–1955) and defended transubstantiation. In each of these problem areas, Garrigou-Lagrange was convinced he was witnessing modernism. The name “new theology” stuck, giving de Lubac and his colleagues an ironic name for their return to old sources.

From condemnation to exoneration

Initially the success of this new-yet-old theology seemed far from guaranteed. In 1950 both de Lubac and Bouillard were exiled from Fourvière and moved to Paris. Some of de Lubac’s most controversial books were put on the Index of Prohibited Books. In the same year, Pius XII’s encyclical Humani generis condemned their theological views. In 1954 the jociste French worker-priests were forced to abandon the factories, and Chenu moved to Rouen. Congar was exiled from Le Saulchoir and eventually ended up in Strasbourg.

Yet by 1960 de Lubac and Congar were put on the preparatory Theological Commission for the Second Vatican Council. Ultimately Vatican II exonerated and perhaps even enshrined nouvelle théologie. The word they had used for retrieval of the church fathers, ressourcement, became a byword of the council. And its effects tracked with their program (see sidebar).

After the council though, they all took different paths. Chenu remained interested in contemporary culture. Theologians, he thought, had the prophetic task of reading the “signs of the times.” He highly prized the autonomy of nature that modernity had brought and was optimistic about humanity’s future. Eventually he would mentor both Gustavo Gutiérrez, founder of liberation theology, and Matthew Fox, founder of the interfaith “creation spirituality” movement. Congar’s outlook mirrored that of his former teacher, Chenu.

By contrast de Lubac and Balthasar became skeptical of further reform. De Lubac felt secularists had hijacked the council’s agenda, calling them the “para-Council.” He had turned to the church fathers to combat modernity, but it seemed his colleagues were now lapsing into the very secularism he had always resisted.

These differences came out in the open when the two groups established separate theological journals. Chenu and his friends founded Concilium in 1965, which aimed to spur further reforms in the church. Meanwhile Joseph Ratzinger (later Pope Benedict XVI), Balthasar, and others established Communio in 1972 to shore up traditional teaching. The former accused the latter of stifling the progress of Vatican II. The latter worried about progressive Catholic theologians capitulating to secularism.

Bringing God back downstairs

Despite such differences both groups focused on one underlying issue: bringing back ancient mystery. The Latin term mysterium has a sacramental connotation; in much Christian thought, mysterium and sacramentum had been used identically. Nouvelle theologians believed that a sacramental outlook on life is needed to combat modernity. Modernity after all had separated heaven and earth, philosophy and theology, and nature and the supernatural. It had banished God upstairs to leave the main floor empty. The nouvelle theologians believed that Neo-Thomism had unwittingly contributed to this rift by treating faith as entirely separate from everyday concerns.

The only way to bring God back onto the main floor is by understanding that the sacraments are part of a grand sacred mystery present in everyday life. In his teaching on the Eucharist, de Lubac soft-pedaled transubstantiation without actually denying it; he was convinced that “the Eucharist makes the church.” The final purpose of the Eucharist is not Christ’s presence in the bread. Instead its ultimate reality is church unity.

When nouvelle theologians rejected Neo-Thomist definitions of truth, they did not believe they were lapsing into relativism. Rather they were stating that God’s capital-T Truth is the eternal mystery in which small-t human truth claims to participate. The movement recognized that the world around us contains mystery that escapes the outward senses. Instead of toppling Catholic thought, it sought to retrieve premodern theological tradition and recover the divine mystery of Christ as the heart of all created being.

Photo: Triumph of Thomas Aquinas, Benozzo Gozzoli [Public domain] — Wikimedia

The Beatific Vision

Contemplating Christ as the Future Present

Fr. I have long been convinced that it is not only Irenaeus who—against all gnosticizing of God’s good creation—had a high view of embodiment, but that all the required ingredients for a It had long been staring at me from the bookshelf above my desk—I think ever since it was published just over ten years ago. But the 874 pages had always been too daunting, and other, more immediate and less formidable challenges kept jumping the queue. I nonetheless finally managed, and so I now have a clearer sense of what people mean when they bandy about terms such as “social imaginary,” “immanent frame,” and “buffered self.”It is no doubt true that the immanent frame (or exclusive humanism) has its own, positive constituent elements. But we should not overplay its originality. Modern liberal democracies are, positively, based on “justice, equality, liberty, and even solidarity,” as Taylor suggests (577). But these are not notions originating in modernity. The contemporary, often aberrant, takes on these notions originate from within the Christian tradition.
<a class="file-embed-button narrow" Even if Aquinas were to have followed his "principle of the maximum" in the unfinished third part of the Summa and so had discussed Christ's own beatific vision as the cause of the saints' beatific vision, he would still have ended up with a christological deficit, inasmuch as Christ would still not be the means and the object of the saints' beatific vision. For a more christologically robust way forward, I draw on John Owen and several other Puritan theologians, who treat the beatific vision as climactic theophany.
<a class="file-embed-button The premodern approach to reality was basically sacramental in character: this-worldly, earthly objects, according to the Christian Platonist tradition, not only point to but also participate in otherworldly, heavenly realities. That is to say, our created realities derive their meaning and significance from the fact that they don't stand on their own, but share, sacramentally, in the eternal Word, or Logos, of God. It's encouraging to me that, over the past number of years, various philosophers and authors have jumped on the Christian Platonist bandwagon. In this article I want to introduce an early Christian Platonist, the fourth-century theologian and mystic Saint Gregory of Nyssa. In the process, I will exposit particularly his views on human sexuality, which is one of the key topics in a recent book I wrote on Gregory. In an earlier book, Heavenly Participation, I have tried to make clear that Christian Platonism doesn't mean the rejection of materiality and embodiment, but should actually entail its opposite: the embrace of time-bound embodiment as sacrament of even greater, eternal, spiritual realities. With this general thought in mind, I wanted to read Gregory--one of the most Platonic of the church fathers--to test my intuition. My hunch was that no matter how Platonic Saint Gregory might be, along with other church fathers he would always be keen to uphold the goodness of created realities, and so also the goodness of the body.
<span The church fathers saw the Scriptures as a sacrament and read them accordingly. Remarkably, perhaps, theologians such as Saint Augustine use the term “sacrament” in a much broader sense than we commonly tend to do. He uses it to describe liturgical feasts (such as Easter and Pentecost), ecclesial rites (including exorcisms and penance), worship activities (singing, reading, prayer, the sign of the cross, bowing of the head), and objects used in church (such as penitential garments, the font, and salt).nMoreover, he regularly refers to scriptural texts as sacramenta. I do not mean to suggest that there is no difference between such sacraments and, say, baptism and Eucharist. Clearly, there is. Throughout the church’s history, these latter two rites have been recognized as central to the church’s life and as making the grace of God present in a unique way—they are authoritatively given by Christ himself for the renewal of his people. At the same time, the early church’s fluidity with regard to the term “sacrament” is helpful in reminding us that God uses not only baptism and Eucharist but also many other activities, rites, objects, people, and celebrations to fill the church’s saints with grace. It would not seem out of place, therefore, to add to Augustine’s list of ecclesial sacraments the Scriptures themselves. Holy Scripture too is a sacrament, inasmuch as it renders Christ present to us— but more about that anon.
<a class="file-embed-button narrow" Edwards’s account treats the resurrection of the body as significant, even indispensable for the deifying vision of God. It is also an account that regards Christ—the “grand medium” of the visio dei—as the consummate theophanic appearance of God. The followers of the early twentieth-century Dutch theologian, Abraham Kuyper, it may fairly be said, took their starting point in his famous saying, “There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry: ‘Mine!’” Kuyper’s neo-Calvinism unambiguously asserted Christ’s rule over every aspect of life and reinvigorated the common people (kleine luyden) to get involved in social and cultural affairs, in politics and economic life, in the arts, and the sciences. A Neo-Calvinist worldview, therefore, is one that redeems all of life and its everyday concerns and that claims it all for the service of Christ.

I want to draw attention to the doctrine of the beatific vision in the father of Dutch neo-Calvinism, Abraham Kuyper (1837–1920). To my knowledge, his understanding of the beatific vision has, to date, not been the topic of any scholarly discussion.
Download

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>
